Urological Health
Screening

Most urological conditions — including prostate cancer and kidney cancer — cause no symptoms in their early stages. A structured annual screen with a specialist consultant gives you clarity, catches problems early, and puts you firmly in control of your health.

Why Screening Matters

Prevention is more powerful than treatment

The NHS offers limited routine urological screening for men — prostate cancer has no national programme, and kidney disease is often only discovered incidentally. For men who want certainty rather than chance, a specialist-led annual screen is the most effective tool available.

Mr Ameen reviews your results personally. You leave with a written report, a clear explanation of every result, and a structured plan — not a letter in the post from someone you've never met.

"I see patients every week who wish they had come sooner. A single appointment can give you the information to act — or the reassurance to stop worrying."

— Mr Torath Ameen, Consultant Urologist & Robotic Surgeon

Early detection saves lives

Prostate cancer caught at stage 1 or 2 is almost always curable. Detected late, the options narrow significantly. The same is true of kidney cancer and early-stage bladder disease.

Consultant-led, not nurse-led

Every screening appointment is with Mr Ameen directly. Your results are interpreted by the surgeon who would treat you — not passed through intermediaries.

Written report every time

You leave with a personalised written summary of all results, recommendations, and a suggested monitoring schedule — something to keep, share with your GP, and refer back to.

All insurers accepted

Screening appointments are covered by most major UK private health insurers including Bupa, AXA Health and Aviva. Self-pay packages are also available at transparent fixed prices.

Who Should Consider Screening

You don't need symptoms to benefit

The most important thing to understand about early urological cancer is that it rarely causes symptoms until it has progressed. Waiting for symptoms means waiting until it may be harder to treat.

A urological screen is particularly recommended if you are a man over 40, have a family history of prostate or kidney cancer, have had a raised PSA in the past, are experiencing any urinary changes, or simply want peace of mind as part of an annual health check.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a PSA test sufficient on its own?
A PSA test is useful but not the full picture. PSA can be elevated by factors other than cancer — including a large benign prostate, inflammation or recent physical activity. Conversely, some prostate cancers occur with a normal PSA. A specialist-led screen interprets PSA alongside your symptoms, family history, physical examination findings and, where indicated, imaging. This gives a far more accurate picture than a single blood test in isolation.
Will my health insurance cover the screening?
Coverage varies by policy. Diagnostic consultations triggered by a symptom or risk factor are typically covered by Bupa, AXA Health, Aviva and most other major UK insurers. Routine health screening (where there are no symptoms) may not be covered under all policies. We recommend contacting your insurer before booking to confirm. Our team can provide the relevant procedure codes to assist with this.
How often should I have a urological screen?
This depends on your individual risk profile. For men with no symptoms, normal PSA and no family history, an annual or biennial screen from age 45–50 is a reasonable approach. Men with a family history of prostate or kidney cancer, a previous raised PSA, or age over 55 are generally advised to screen annually. Mr Ameen will provide a personalised monitoring schedule at the end of your first appointment.
What happens if something abnormal is found?
Any abnormality is discussed with you in plain language during the appointment — you will never leave without understanding your results. Where further investigation is needed (for example an MRI scan, cystoscopy or repeat blood tests), Mr Ameen will arrange this directly. Being seen by the same consultant throughout means there is no delay in communication and no information lost between referrals.
Do I need a GP referral to book a screening?
No — you can self-refer directly. Simply book online via the Carebit portal or call the clinic. If your insurer requires a GP referral letter, your GP can provide this. Mr Ameen will write to your GP after the appointment to keep them informed of any findings, unless you prefer otherwise.
Is the screening suitable for younger men?
Yes. Men with a first-degree relative (father or brother) diagnosed with prostate cancer before the age of 65, or men of African or Caribbean heritage (who have a significantly elevated lifetime risk), are advised to begin screening from age 40. Men experiencing symptoms such as difficulty urinating, visible blood in urine or testicular changes should seek assessment regardless of age.
